  1. Create google, microsoft, blackboard, seesaw, schoology, or additional platform avatars using online art resources such as google slides and jamboard, Microsoft powerpoint, and Bitmoji. If possible, students can also take a selfie through their electronic device to upload. Check for appropriate pictures before students upload them.

    1. This creates community and relationship building when students can use their own images of themselves (drawn, cartoon, or picture).

    2. An alternative picture can be used for students who do not feel comfortable.

  2. Utilize free sites such as canva or computer platforms such as Microsoft powerpoint to create “e-index cards” of their names or art for students to further express themselves.

  3. Organize a virtual buddy system with another ELL/ESL student or a student from their grade level. This buddy system promotes positive behavior, accountability, and respect while also building a positive school community.

  4. Invite speakers into your classroom from local Immigration and Citizenship centers, former refugee members, the school district’s ELL/Immigrant/Refugee director, or local speakers who all serve as accredited advocates that students can learn and grow.

  5. Visual and audio supports such as audio books, virtual readings, fun and educational online games (kahoot or virtual scavenger hunts), TV or movie clips, or YouTube.

  6. Record videos of yourself teaching academic, social-emotional, or college and career skills. Anything between 5-15 minutes is great!

  7. Worry less on grades and more on participation with you and other classmates.

  8. If possible, create weekly “goody bags” for students to complete tasks or start a new hobby such as vision boards, foldables, stress balls, or journaling.

  9. Practicing navigating the internet on a variety of devices your students may have at home; iPad, laptop, cellphone, desktop, or tablet.

    1. Practice using search engines like Google or usual school related platforms like Microsoft office or the Google platform.

  10. Teach essential life skills (essential to your discretion). This includes time management, goal setting, problem solving, hygiene, study skills, and relational aggression.
